I wanted to say thanks for all the information in this forum. We purchased a Green Mountain 60 with some trepidation and fired it up on Wednesday. After the first few small break in fires, most of the off-gassing smell is gone and the stove is working like a champ. We are good candidates for this stove--tall enough chimney and pipe angles that help with the flue draw. We also know to open the bypass before opening the front door. We have not had smoke in the house. We do have a weird banging sound which seems to be the metal tag under the stove heating and expanding. We'll deal with that eventually. Just wanted to offer this info to anyone who has been concerned about this stove.

What size is your house?
I have a 1000 sq ft , is it do able to modulate the out put?
I like the 60 because it will take 18” logs.
I know the 40 model would work but it only takes 16”

Do you like the way heats? Takes longer to heat up because of soap stone?

We have a 2500 square foot house and the stove heats a good portion of it once it gets going. It sits in our kitchen and heats our connected dining room and upstairs without a problem. It's 14 degrees F outside right now and our kitchen is 77 degrees. The living room down the hall is cooler, but not cold. I'm not sure it really takes that much longer to heat up even though that's the general consensus about soapstone. I remember waiting to feel warm with our old Vigilant too. It's also easier to light and get going. In the two months we've been using the GM 60, we learned we need a window fan behind it to blow the heat out of the kitchen. We also have a ceiling fan in the kitchen to circulate air. We had two cords of 18 inch wood, so we needed the 60 (also because we wanted to heat a good portion of our house). I would be worried the 60 would overheat your 1,000 square foot space, but you can have it burn low. Just be sure to burn hot at least once/day to clear creosote. We are going to get 16 inch wood for the stove for next year to make it easier to load (18 really is the max for the GM 60). We really like the stove--way more than I thought we would given some of the reviews. It's been a champ so far. Let me know if you have other questions.

Thanks for the info.
I could find many reviews on the gm60 nor the Jotul F445, since newer stoves.
I’m too lazy to cut 2 cords of wood down to 16” to fit a stove that size 1400-1500 sw ft so most 18” log stoves are for 2000 sqft but bring Cat stoves for overnight burns you can turn the air way down.
The Jotul is up to 1600 and takes up to 20” log.
That maybe the way to go but the burn times are up to 9 hours compared to gm60 supposed to produce meaningful heat for 12 hours
I could go to a steel hybrid stove but I like the cast iron ones
To me being able to use 18” wood no problem means longer burns and less wood handling since I’m an old fart

Well, 18 inch wood definitely fits since that's what we're burning. If we load the stove up before bed, the little kinetic fan on top is still going in the morning. There are always hot coals to make re-starts easier (it also needs to be shoveled out nearly every day). If we could have found a used Jotul 400 nearby for a decent price, we would have bought it, but I do like the longer burn times of this stove.

These stoves thrive with the blower kit installed. I have the Hearthstone Craftsbury which is the equivalent to the GM40, same firebox, different door and finish. My installer said I didn't need the blower so I didn't buy it initially.

After doing some deep dives into others who heat full time with their Hearthstone stoves I bit the bullet and bought the blower kit. I was so disappointed with the noise level of the fan!

But, I found someone who had replaced the innards of their blower with an aftermarket DC/DC fan kit intended for a stove insert. What a change maker. The blower comes with a phone app (what doesn't these days) so I programmed the blower so that the hotter my stove gets, the harder the fan blows. The sound is barely noticeable and it keeps my stove top from getting too hot.

I can now essentially heat my entire house with Green Mountain 40 (Craftsbury) and on most days my wife throws 2 splits on the fire and she'll get 2 hours worth of heat maintaining 72-74F temps when it's 18-20F outside.

GM60 is perfect for 18" splits. You'll really enjoy it, especially if you have the draft for it. Enjoy.
