I have a direct vent fireplace heat n glo 750 that seems to be smothering out when I try to light it I have checked vent everything looks clean but at the base of fireplace when I remove logs I have an opening that seems to have insulation coming out of it is that normal

That is NOT normal. IIRC, that' s where the combustion air should be entering.
Does the unit burn ok with the glass front removed?
I'd push that insulation to one side & see if that helps...

Yes will run fine with the glas opened at the top
