Is this legal? Does it depend upon local code? I am looking into heating about 10k-15k sq ft.

As always, it would be prudent to check with the local authorities. If your boiler is a closed or pressurized type ala EKO, Econoburn or Tarm, you may need a licensed boiler installer to do the actual installation. A non pressurized system falls under mechanical codes only as it is technically not a "boiler".

If you have a wood burner of any type inside the building, the issue will probably be with your insurance company so check with them also. If you can, select a unit like a Garn that is sealed combustion using no air from inside the building to supply the burn. That will eliminate one reason for the inspectors to complain about.

A model 2000 would be about just right provided your building is insulated reasonably.
