Help with Vermont Castings Catalyst

i have a vermont castings defiant encore stove that was given to me.it does not have a catalyst in it and the spacer that holds it in place is missing.vermont castings rep advised me not to use the stove. does anyone have any advice as to whether i can use it safely?

Just wondering if you can buy the replacement part you need and make it right?
