Hot hot do you run your i2450? (tubes glowing?)

With my thermometer above the door (see photo), I'm maxing my stove out at 550deg F. ( This reading might be lower than actual temp, due to difficulty of placing thermometer on this insert for accurate readings).

The secondary air tubes are just starting to glow at this point. When it gets that hot, I basically close the damper all the way, and it cooks really well for a long time.

Does this seem ideal to you all? I'm new to this, and not sure how hot I should be getting it. But I read in a couple threads that getting the secondary air tubes to glow a little is ok. Any opinions?
