Hello Auzzie. I'm curious why would wood be so much for you to buy in Australia? I've worked with people who have worked in the ski resorts there so I know you get somewhat of a winter in certain high regions like the snowy mountains. I'm sure I'm being ignorant but I didn't think there would be much demand for firewood there unless trees in your area are scarce. Is there much of a wood heat culture there? Thanks!its worth whatever you are willing to pay... to me wood is very expensive in Australia - well over $600 a cord and then its not super dry. I would bite her hand off at $250.
We live near Melbourne and it doesn't get too cold here - there's not many nights which get below freezing. But i used to live in th UK and the major difference between Aus and UK is the amount of insulation we have in our houses. It is practically non-existent here in Aus so even though the temps don't get too low the house becomes very cold very quick. i have found that i much prefer the heat that you get from a wood heater than that from ducted gas heating which cycles between hot and cold and doesn't really heat the 'bones' of the house like a wood heater.Hello Auzzie. Thanks for the reply! I remember that second photo from last year and think I might have commented on it. What you say makes sense. I remember a few years ago spending a few weeks in Phoenix Arizona during Christmas and the place we rented had thin walls and a few days even had a light frost! I remember waking up in the morning surprised I was cold. It occurred to me that the walls were thin and the windows had very little insulating value. Happy burning! We live near Melbourne and it doesn't get too cold here - there's not many nights which get below freezing. Serious wood burners (like me) scrounge all their wood - its very easy to do as plenty of people are trying to get rid of recently felled trees from their yards especially when it gets warmer when you can be very selective on species and location. The wood burners who do it for ambiance don't mind paying $170 per Metre ($615 per cord) as that will last them a month with 1 fire a day. I burn 24 hours a day and if i had to buy my wood gas heating would be a lot cheaper.
Here's my latest scrounge (weekend) and a photo of the bottom of my yard - i live in / near a forest.
