Husqvarna flywheel

I have a Husqvarna 455 rancher that wont start. I pulled the flywheel but I am not sure how large the built in key should be. There is a very small built up on my flywheel. I dont know if that is normal or if the key has been sheered. I hate to buy a new flywheel for $95 if I dont have to. Anyone that knows what the key should look like please respond.

Why did you pull the flywheel? Unless it was obviously loose, that's an odd place to begin when a saw won't start. To your question, the key doesn't have to be very tall to locate the flywheel. Unless it's broken off, this probably isn't your problem.

The 450 455 460 ones I've seen, there is a small rounded key cast into flywheel. But I agree with question posed above - why pull it? Do you think timing's off? And the key is only a locator - it does next to nothing to hold the flywheel on the crankshaft. The taper and proper nut torque hold it in place.

I don't have a 455, but all the other Husky flywheels I've seen have a fairly small cast-in key. There are pics of similar flywheels you can see at:

jackd, I have a Stihl blower that has a similar key set up. I shut it off 1 time from high rpm and fractured the key. I went all thru the motor and couldn't find the issue so took it up to the local shop. $25 he diagnosed it and tried to talk me into a new one. I took the box of parts home, filed a new keyway into the flywheel and put in a steel key. Got another 5 years on it so far. That key sets the timing and looking at your second picture it looks like you have a broken one as well. I cant see it that well but you can so have a good look. I think they wanted 90 - 100 for new flywheel but it would have had the same aluminum key set up that just broke on mine. I had an engineering class a while back and this key cut into the flywheel is done to save the company money and not for the benefit of the consumer. Well good luck with your saw.........rn
