Be very careful not to stick your nose in a dirty cherry.
One bad cherry and you'll consider switching to gas.

Ahhhh the smell of fresh cut cherry.

Black Locus I think stinks... worse when burned in the stove though!
 
Cottonwood, willow and popple are not the best smelling for sure.
 
I think the only solution is to plant a bunch of male Ginko biloba trees around the splitting area. They will keep you from sniffing the wood too much.
