I batted 1 for 3 for scrounges today!

I had gotten permission to get some Black Locust from an area that I got some about 4 years ago, so that was a "hit". Stopped at two other places that I had seen wood for awhile now, but both homeowners decided they were either keeping it or it was promised to someone else, so I went 1 for 3 in scrounges which is .333 percent lol!

Just keep looking and asking, most usually say yes, but after two brutal Winters I'm hearing "no" more lately!

Black Locust is a great score. I just got a half cord of it in a scrounge last October. Split it immediately. Easy splitting too. Doesn't seem like a 2 year wood. Is it?

Good luck to you with your scrounging ! I find the trill of the hunt to be a good part of the experience. Yes BL is the way to go too.

It depends.. Dead standing locust I find to be ready in one season. Live cut BL is 2 seasons for me to get into the low 20s though.

IME, that's a start. BL is pretty close-grained, as can be seen after 3+ yrs air-drying, the way it builds little steam-pockets to toss sparks. In my local conditions anyway, BL keeps getting better for at least 4 yrs, even longer than red oak. Dead standing is not a big factor IME.

No pressure here to put it to use, with lots of inventory.

I guess that's one way to look at it, but I'd say you are 100% ahead of where you were before.
