12 year old Burnham V83. When brushing from above, go VERY shallow so as not to pierce target insulation. Then brush from side. Maybe just vacuum top and not brush at all.

I developed this tip minutes ago while attempting my first oil boiler cleaning, and am currently waiting on a replacement combustion chamber kit (Lynn 1129, $108 from Patriot Supply).

I did the same thing to my peerless last year, 1st time ive owned an oil boiler. I just knocked off the top lip in one corner so i hope its ok cause i havnt replaced it yet.
 
hope you did it with a soot vac that dust is nasty.
