So...I have had my stove for 7 years now and when I put it in I just ran the vent pipe half way up flue and stuffed some fireproof insulation up the chimney and ran it. No issues for all the years but I knew probably should be done to cap. So set up a professional install but as you can see in my pic I need 6 inches in front of glass with a hearth protector to be good with my insurance company and my installer says I have to have it.

Give me some ideas please (I want to keep it simple)!

Tile stone really wayever you like. I went with natural stone on mine cuz I like it rustic.

I guess better question is can I place a hearth guard in front of stove over wood floor and be good?

Yes you can. I put 3ft by 4 ft granite counter top right on a engineered wood floor. Then the stove on top of the granite.
