ID this wood...please

So I was thinking this stuff might be sycamore but it is very different from any sycamore I have seen. I was also thinking it might be some sort of ash by the way it was splitting but the bark has me stumped. There is a bunch of this stuff down the street by my house and is free. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is in southern New York on the P.A. Border.

It looks like sycamore, but any sycamore I have split has been a pain. Definitely not like ash. I suppose there is always an exception.

I would burn a lot more sycamore if it was easier to split. I turn a lot down though because I split by hand.

Yeah I split all my wood by hand too. So far it wasn't too bad it hasn't been horrible. The 8 lbs. maul has been getting a lot of use.

The bark definitely looks like the sycamores we have here, at least the more mature ones--I think they have to reach a certain age before they get to the smooth/light gray bark stage.

My father has a sycamore in his front yard that has been shedding the bark since I could remember. It is about 3'-4' in diameter it is a beastly looking tree. The whole thing looks just like 1st picture I posted. Either way it will be a nice scrounge. Thanks guys.

No other tree out there looks like a sycamore. It's an easy one to id. Oh and around here, it stinks to high heaven when splitting.
