Ignitor is glowing red hot when stove is off

Hi,
Long time troubleshooter....errr...owner of a Quadrafire Mt Vernon. I'm sick of this stove and wish I had never went with this model.

My latest problem is that I have an ignitor that never turns off and glows red hot even after the stove has turned off (failed with 4 blinks) and cooled down. This makes cleaning out the full, unburned pellets impossible without some sort of tool or scoop to save the unused fuel.

Sidenote, the stove fails to restart EVERYTIME it reaches room temp. Stove attempts to start but ultimately fails with 4 blinks. Every morning we wake to a cold house because it reached temp over night and then failed to start in the morning when the schedule triggers it.

The current issue is coming off the back of a series of issues that led to this glowing ignitor.

The stove failed one morning and the indicator light on the control panel was out. No power. Check the motherboard fuse and it was blown. Replaced the fuse with another I had one hand, which worked briefly, and long enough to see that the ignitor wasn't working. But, the fuse was faulty (or something) because it caused a pop and sparks as it cooked the motherboard.

Ordered a new ignitor from a vendor I had used before. But, the motherboard is cooked so an ignitor doesn't mean jack without a board.

Luckily I have various motherboards from other troubleshooting sessions, so before I ordered a new one, I tried installing one of the 3 that I had with the new ignitor.

Stove started first try and ran all day, but...it was an extremely cold day with single digit temps outside. The stove never got the room up to temp so didn't notice the glowing ignitor. Next morning though after the nightly 4-blink failure, the stove was hot to the touch. That's when I looked and saw the glowing ignitor.

Sounds to me that the controler/triac on the “motherboard” you are using has failed in a closed position that allows the igniter to have voltage all the time. Only fix is to change the controler/triac or replace the board.
