Picked up another cord of silver maple this morning...

Not that I'm particularly fond of silver maple, but I'm starting to think I may be a bit short on wood the next couple years. My work schedule has kept me from cutting for the last 3 years and I'm down to my burning the last of my oak and black locust this winter. All I have left is 2-3 cords of Osage Orange and I prefer to save that for the bitter cold nights only... so I scrounged another cord from the same place I did back in August (that 48" diameter silver maple is still there)...

I got up, did a few things around the house, then went to cut, came home and split, and while I had the truck back at the wood stacks I filled it up and brought another half-cord of white oak up to the house for this winter... I'm exhausted now...

I think that is why"work" is a four letter word. It got in my way, too! I just had a mixed cord delivered today and getting another tomorrow. I told the guy I'd buy 3-4 more cords if liked what I saw, then I try to get back to doing it myself.

The up side of the hard labor is that food tastes so much better and once you eat and then sit by the fire...no matter how uncomfortable the chair is...you are just comfy and life is grand.
Amen sister!

I had plans to haul a bunch of wood I had cut in Oct. to the splitter today, but finished a 70 hour work week at 10:00 this morning, came home had lunch, hit the couch by the fire for a short rest and now it's dark, no adding to the stacks now til next weekend.

There is nothing wrong with soft maple, I burn about 90% maple and it heats my house fine. Now when I go to bed I put in oak/ash/hedge/hardwoods for over night. I never pass on soft maple and have at least 10 cord of it and will take more. Now I will not pass on ash and other hardwoods.

Soft maple is great stuff when I need seasoned wood in a year. Burns just dandy.

I know there isn't anything wrong with it, it's just that it's hard to put in all the work and time on a 17 MBTU wood when there is ~24 MBTU wood all over the place (Oak). The problem is, I'm going to need this next year and the year after so Oak probably won't be seasoned in time, so silver maple it is...
