I just had an insert installed by my dealer and then came across this site and now I have some questions. We have a 16x16 or 15x15 flue that is interior. W One wall is in the house the other is in an insulated garage. Only contact with the outside is above the roof. We had a full liner ran to the top. about 14 feet high from the top of the insert. Anyways the dealer said I did not need it to be insulated, thus it is not. They also never mentioned anything about a block off plate at the damper. I have used the stove a few times and it is a little difficulty to get the draft going but once it is up and running it seems to work fine. Should this have been insulated? If so, what are my options now? Also is it possible to go in and add a block off plate at this point? How important is this with an interior chimney? The owers/installation manner does not mention insulation or a block off plate. Also, the top plate is supposed to be air tight correct? If so, I need to call them back out because it looks like they just caulked it down to the top of the chimney and one corner has pullled back. I can see a visibile 1/4 inch gap.
