Introduction - Hello all

Hello,

New here. Been lurking for a month or so looking for stove info as my wife and I just self-installed a PE vista insert into our living room. Found a ton of good info that really helped.

The install went well (thanks to all of you). No problems from the insurance company. Just wanted pictures to note on the policy.

We have done the break-in fires with very great success, albeit a little stinky. We cannot wait for the temps to be consistently cool enough for extended burning. Living in Salt Lake affords us the opportunity to purchase a permit for wood cutting in the neighboring National Forests. Unfortunately, that means we predominately burn pine. Which isn't the worst, but not the best.

I am feeling like I want to burn all the time and sit and stare into the firebox!

I know there are a lot of hardwood shade trees in Salt Lake City so maybe you can scrounge a little hardwood to compare to the pine. If pine is all you ever have, you'll still be warm.

That's normal. Welcome to the forum.

Yep.. getting the stove lit "cruising" then sitting back and watching winter roll by is pretty much the standard operating procedure (sop) around here. Variations on this theme run along the lines of, maybe a sip of bourbon, snow blowing the driveway and stacking more wood. Some of my personal secondary activities include playing mellow jazz on the turntable (yes turntable) and feeding the birds, wild turkeys and squirrels.

Welcome to the forums, JC. Rest assured that there are many of us out here in the west who have basically nothing but softwoods to burn. Amazingly enough, we don't routinely hear of anyone freezing to death because of lack of nice hardwood for their stove. Rick

I love staring into the fire too but it get old opening and closing the doors every 5 seconds. Never burns right.(no glass)

Been watching the show with the Alaskan homesteaders and it looks like all they have is pine and they heat 9 mos. out of the year with only wood and loads of it!

Welcome to the forum JC. Happy to hear you did the install yourself and the insurance company approved. That is the way it should be. As for the pine, there are many folks who do that and get along just fine.

You'll have plenty of time to sit and stare at that firebox come winter time. Enjoy.

Bah, we're in the northeast and pretty much have only landed good scrounges of softwoods like pine and box elder. No problems keeping warm here either. Actually, liking the pine pretty well. Maybe Lopi is built for pine being from the NW.
