No idea what this stuff is. Just moved in and cleaning out the fireplace. Sat on top of this was what looked like imitation coal. I took it out and put it in a bag, that’s the second picture. Is this ceramic fibre or asbestos?
 
Given the age, it's best to assume it's asbestos and treat it as such.
 
It's best for this material to remain covered and sealed so that no dust escapes.
