Hi, we have a beautiful Jotul 118 with a relief forest/moose scene. The side panel has cracked straight through the moose and we can see flames when it’s lit! We were wondering about replacing the side panel but our local shop said you can’t order parts anymore. Should we try to fix it or move on :( we use our wood stove as our primary heat in the winter ~4 cords

If this stove is the primary source of heat, then it either needs to be fully repaired or replaced. Are the interior burn plates damaged or missing? If so they will need to be replaced too.

Without seeing the stove's overall condition, inside or out it's hard to judge, but I would say it's time to replace. This could be with another good condition F118 or with a modern EPA stove that will burn cleaner, use less wood, and will provide a nice fire view.

It needs to be repaired or retired. You should not use the stove in this condition.

You can try to find another 118 for sale with a good side plate, and then attempt a rebuild. You will also need to buy 2 interior side plates.

Its not the easiest of Jotuls to rebuild either, so take your time.

It would be a good idea, if you can afford it, to find a rebuilt F118 with a 2 piece baffle.

Unfortunately every F118 you will find on craigslist or Facebook will almost always have bad inside plates and a burnt out baffle which also require a full rebuild to repair. Which gets expensive.

I love that stove and have a knock off version. Unfortunately that stove is notorious for cracking there. Best to put it outside as an outdoor patio fireplace. You can be diligent on craigslist & local online classified listings and find a good used epa stove. It will be much better and burn much cleaner and use less wood. Or if you can afford it get a new stove, as a primary heater a epa stove, new or used, is for sure the way to go.
