I have purchased a jotul 550, need to make a decision on raising the mantle or installing the mantle heat shield. It is impossible to make this decision as Jotul does not publish any specification on their mantle shield for the Jotul. There is no way to contact anybody at Jotul, as there are no phome numbers, the dealers don't seem to know a lot about the shield either.

I would like to mnow how far it extends out away from the fireplace?
Will the mantle shield work with the steel surround?

I would rather rais the Mantle as opposed to have some peice of chit sticking out of the front of my fireplace?

Jotul has all this info on the web site about the experience, visual aspect and warmth. The one picture I have seen on this blog the shield looks like a flimsy bent peice of sheet metal, seems as if it would be more apealing if it were the same width as the insert.

If anyone has any information on this topic please respond.

The mantle shield alone "appears" big. When installed, it is virtually unnoticeable to me and others that visit my house. It slides right behind the surround. I had to have it due to clearances. Not a big deal at all.

Here is a good photo of mine with heat shield.

I ran into this dilemma myself. For the installers to install that day (with no heatshield) we removed the mantle so my choice is between ripping the mantle narrower, or raising it. In my instance I only need to go about 3/4" so I will probably do that but the way mine is mounted might create some issues. I think I will take the oppurtunity to upgrade the mantle at the same time, thinking about a hand hewn 6x6 or 8x8 would be really nice!

I'll agree with Sen. John. The mantle shield is no big deal. I don't even notice mine anymore and it is bigger/longer than the one in Sen. John's picture. Plus you can remove it when the stove is not in use during the summer.

It would be nice if they could make it full length of the insert. They could also integrate a place to set a 1/2 water pot that other stoves have.

There are many inserts on the market that allow for a 1/2 water pot. But the C-550 being flush i would think that would be tough. Was the water pot a key when you went to purchase? I know the C-450 has this ability if you slide it out on the hearth a little. As far as the heat shield goes, I would recommend getting it done locally then you can have it any size you want. I know most sheet metal shops wouldnt charge too much for that little piece of metal. And when its all done you could paint it with high temp paint.

Third agreement with Sen. John. I was concerned it would detract from the insert and my husband was sure he would cut himself on it. Neither has happened and it has been in use for several years now and I simply don't notice it at all except when it is time to dust it off.

I leave it on in the summer too. A hassle to remove as it is attached to the surround and it is heavy - the surround is heavy.

Funny. That works better than I'd have thought given the description.

We have a very similar setup but did not consider a heat shield. I don't remeber the stove shop offering one, and though I got some contacts at a shop that custs sheet and does powder coating I hadn't considered fabricating one,

Instead, we removed our wooden mantel and had a 72" x 5" x 2" blue stone mantel installed. The mantel cost about $120 plus $100 to install and made the combustables issue go away.

You're really only limited by your imagination with these kinds of problems.
