just picked up an old style jotul 602 with the solid door not the glass door. my question is it does not have the upper air chamber or air exchanger did this model have one originally and if it did is it needed to operate?

From what I can find here:

(broken link removed to http://jotul.com/us/guides/identify-your-old-j%C3%B8tul-product-and-user-manuals)

I would say that there WAS a baffle in that unit.
Without it in there, burning will probably damage the top of the stove.
