Long time lurker/first time poster. Hopefully the picture of one of my stacks comes through, looking forward to burning seasoned wood after two seasons of eco blocks and standing dead oak. I was curious why I don't see many solar kilns on this forum. Seems like a small woodshed stripped and covered in plastic would heat up the wood and cut down seasoning time drastically...but I'm sure there's more to it than that

I am interested in the kiln idea myself, but come this time next year I may very well be over it. Unless I start selling it.

So, I saw the tarps off to the side, are you covering the stacks or leaving them open? It looks like you are going with the single row plan. My cousin does that with his. Hes on the Canadian border. His stack runs East to West along a long open field.

Thanks for the welcome! I started off with tarps but graduated to plywood. The stacks range between 5 and 6 feet and parts of them seem to be defying the laws of physics the way they are leaning I've heard a lot about Scotty here and would like to join the club.

Sounds like you've bought a nice place to work with.

I don't like to criticize but would like to point out one little problem you might have with the above picture. (Hope I have the right one but can't tell until the post is made.) But that stack right in front of the shed where you have 2 pieces of plywood. Notice that they both tip down toward the center of the stack. This means all water will run right down into that wood. A little water won't do harm but this will get water from a larger area and you'll find wood there to be very water logged. You want the water to run off the ends; not the middle.

Hello Dennis, and thank you. I've learned a good deal from you and the other veterans on this site...who knew oak took a decade to season Ok, maybe it just seems that way.

Thank you. Yes, most people are surprised to find that different types of trees dry at different rates. Oak is about the worst for time but really great for burning.
