Kindling to wood use?

How much kindling do you think would be necessary for weekend winter use?
I get through about 3 maybe 4 cords per winter and am usually starting a fresh fire each day not relighting from one already burning.

No idea ... but I know even when burning 24/7 I tend to use a fair amount of kindling ... I tend to err on the side of having too much kindling vs not having enough since fires are always easier to light with a decent quantity of kindling ... well that and a chunk of a Super Cedar.

I burn about a cord each winter. Burn overnight only weekdays and most of day weekends. Start new fire each time.
I have a covered rectangular trash barrel with mini wheels that I fill pretty tight with sticks from dropped branches etc. By spring it is just about empty.

Personally, when I could get super cedars, I didn't use kindling at all. I had really nice dry wood and the 15 minutes my super cedar burnt, the wood was throwing some serious flames.

That being said, this year I have a cord of small split super dry softwood. 4-5 pieces of that, hardwood on top with my fire starter under. Poof!

I use very little kindling but i burn 24/7. I really usually only start from cold between 5 to 10 times in a year.

I burn 24/7, but I still use a fair amount of kindling during the shoulder season. I split up my kindling as I go through the shoulder season because I've never really been able to come up with a good way to store it. Any ideas out there?

A garbage can or an air conditioner box is what I have used in the past......

I bought retired wooden apple crates from my local farm market a couple years ago for a different purpose but never used them. I can buck my kindling wood into 10 inch long rounds then split them into one or two inch splits. I fill the crates as I split then stack and cover them in one corner of the barn. As I need kindling I carry a crate inside. I have filled 10 crates for this year. I don't know how many I'll go through as this is my first year with the crates and also my first year with a 100 count box of super cedars. Plastic milk crates are about the same size.

I use a 55gal. Plastic barrel with the lid cut off. My local saw mill dumps piles of trimmings of dry pine. Free! Make great tinder.

thats worked for me too. i just bring it in when i haul in the wood. i burn 24/7 but my little jotul sometimes goes out except for a few embers and its fun coaxing it back. i have some super cedars but they last a long long time before i have to order a new batch.

Best thing to do is find a good source that you can hopefully rely on should you start to run out. I have several trash cans full, but I also have friends in the construction, and cabinet business, not to mention my sons Karate class that breaks pine 1x's regularly. I've stocked up even though I am hoping to use less kindling and fire starters from now on with my new 27. I tend to generate a lot myself all year long that I save just from household renovations and projects. I save every scrap.

Well, we have 2 fireplaces and went through about 3 cords last year.

I keep a separate smaller box of kindling hidden in the brick oven cavity that I replenish from 18 gal bins in the basement.

But a weekend's worth? About a nice big handful.
