Does anybody have any experience s a large winter warm insert?
The one I have seems to burn wood too fast. And damper door see to get stuck on closing at times.

I own one for the past 20 years or so. I have not had any issues with the damper door. So I really can not comment on the door other than you may need to disassemble a bit to see what's going on.

There could be a number of things causing it to consume more wood. The cat may need to be cleaned or replaced or the gaskets around the damper or possibly the door may need replacing.
Have you cleaned or replaced the cat lately?

Are you able to choke it down so you have very little to no flames in the firebox? Do you have smoke coming out of the chimney? Does the damper door shut completely against the gasket?
If your gasket is shot on the damper door it could use a lot of wood.

When I choke the amount of flame b early changes. I do have the coal
Look but not towards the end of my burn.
Wife replaced the gasket in door it stayed pretty good except for small area above door handle. By the way door handle needs constantly be adjusted.

I will try doing the damper gasket after winter. I did find others that had similar issue with damper door. Seems the rod that comes down from the top has a pin that sticks out. I filed it down. I also had a lot of play in the damper door closing &opening. It's working now but I may need to pull the complete unit out in the summer and inspect the linkage.
You sure are lucky not having damper issue!
Thanks for the reply.

Forgot to answer your question.
I have never cleaned or re placed the CAT.
Is it hard to remove? Is there a link that shows how to remove?

It's a bit of a pain. Just takes some time. Not sure about any link to instructions. You might want to search the web or go to a VC dealer and ask them. It sets behind a plate in the back of the stove firebox. I have used compressed air to blow it off without removing it before. It most likely will need to be replaced because of its age. Try cleaning first.
