Nice catch, Mitch. I like to split big rounds like that into square and rectangle shaped splits. It's usually a pleasant surprise how many splits come out of each fat round. Way to go!

Gark, how is the best way to split the big rounds into square pieces? Start at the edge?

If you're using the power splitter, I would crack 'em in half first. Then you're not wrestling that big round any more than you have to.

I do the same thing as Gark......any gigantic rounds get split into squared off pieces (4x4" -5x5"), which make fantastic cribbings at the end of the stacks. The way I do it is try and split the round in half. Then take one half, put the flat portion against the beam of the splitter, start working from one end and make a bunch of 4-5" pieces. Then, take those pieces and split them as required.....

I REALLY like the rounds that you get 30-40 splits out of.....I'd say you got some rounds that will yield 20 or more, and that's some big rounds! I don't like to say this to another guy, but you got a nice ash there, Mitch!
