I purchased a used Buck 51 wood burning insert that I want to install in a masonry chimney. I had the chimney checked and it is in good shape, but the clay liner is 8"x12", with the small side inside width of 6.5". The insert is designed for a 6" flue. I want to line the chimney for safety. If I use a 6" liner, I don't think that I will be able to wrap it in insulation. Should I use a smaller liner (maybe 5.5"), don't insulate, use an oval liner (higher cost), or something else? The chimney is about 15' tall and I live in northern Alabama. I want the install to be safe, but at a reasonable cost.
Thanks.
