Liner installation Question Damper in the way

We are running into a problem. We have a damper, which I have attached a picture. That is causing a problem to pull the liner through to be able to attach to a stove, which needs a custom made attachment. Pre EPA Pioneer stove.

Do we cut the damper out? Otherwise it is a straight shot of clay lined chimney 13" wide. We are installing a 8" insulated liner.

Damper opening measurements: 5 5/8" x 32" long.

I know about doing a block off plate, just want to be sure what to do with this damper

Cut a U in it to fit the liner through.

You can cut it out, if you or anyone else ever wants to make it a functioning firepace again (no stove or liner) they can put in a top sealing damper anyway so no worries for the future.

Thank You all! We are having a hard time cutting it out. It seems it was put in with the build of the chimney so it is somewhat built in with the brick and mortar around it.

They used a hydraulic bottle type jack if I remember right, and a piece of 4x4 board or something like that and just broke mine out.

Well we have just about any tool available, tried with a sawsall. was able to cut out a piece, tried to hammerout around the cast iron and it did break up a corner of it. Angle grider the latch off, still working on the rest of it.
We have so many tools, just not sure what is the best for this project, a touch

I think my friend who did ours used a reciprocating saw, but he also had to take out a couple of the bricks from the smoke shelf to get the liner through.

We have one of those and was using it. Might need to find the cut off wheels, the disk used was not a cut off wheel.

You can buy the cutoff wheels at any hardware store.

I used a sawzall and grinder then chipped away few fire brick and got my 8 inch straight down. I then made a block off plate with fireboard and used toggle bolts and I made 2 brackets that hang from top of damper with a hole in each for toggle bolts

We used a reciprocating saw, banged a couple bricks out with a hammer and chisel and I attached the block off plate with magnets I bought at HD.

Thanks, we have a plan now. will get grinder wheels, we have them but dont know where we put them.

Question:
I had to do the same thing to open up and remove the old fireplace damper to bring the insulated liner down. I now have a drafty opening around the liner where the damper used to be. What insulation can I use to stuff up and around to fill that void to prevent heat loss?
