Hi - I have a 50's brick fireplace and this winter the metal lintel fell apart. The brickwork is in very good condition with no cracks (the fireplace is actually part of a fairly massive brick heat-a-lator system) and for what it's worth, I'm in the Houston area so no great temperature extremes.
I'm going to grind/cut off what is left. The question is, after 60 or 70 years of the mortar hardening, do I need to replace the lintel? Any suggestions or links appreciated. Thanks Grady
