Log 10 ID, Have I Got a Red Oak Yet?

Looks like a true red oak to me, but I'm sure it will change. A good size log too. A went a liitle overboard with pics one this one... got a little excited. (Shhhhhh, don't tell the wife!)

Absolutely Red Oak.

Northern red oak. Bark has "ski trails" on it. Pungent odor compared to fresh cut white oak which has an awesome vanilla aroma.

Okay, now we are getting somewhere (or at least I am) with the oaks. I looked at this stuff yesterday, having been 2 days after cutting and it not as red as log 11 is. That red oak pic you posted was a good show and tell for me. So, so far I have a white, 2 black and a red. Thanks J

A few of the pictures in the first post (in particular the third picture) show the very bottom of the trunk where the bark on this tree looks a lot like Black Oak. However, the pictures that show the bark farther up the trunk show the characteristic smooth shiny ridges of a Northern Red Oak. Around here lots of Red Oaks look just like Black Oaks if you look only at the bottom of the trunk. I can tell the difference only when I look at the bark up on the middle portion of the trunk where the smooth shiny ridges are found.Just to be clear, I still say this is a Red Oak.

In this picture, log 4 on the left, 9, 10 and 11 on the right. Just looking at color of the red family, (the 2 on the right) look very close where the known black oak the left is definitly darker. The other is the white oak.

Bottom line no, it's just fire wood, but isn't this a great science project?
