Log 20 ID, Maple ?

I think I am in the maple section of this grapple load. The bark on this one is smooth at the small diameters and a litte deeper at the thick. Coloring is blue/grey but there was some black on it too. Pretty white inside even though the end grain pics look brown.

If its hard and coming form a logger that the nasty-est looking hard wood maple ever.

That seem to be the case. Those growth rings are huge and double heart wood screams less than hard.

+1. Thanks for the tips. We need all the help we can get! That kind of info is not in the book. I've cut my share of wood recently, so I could help myself by being a little more observant and noticing some of the distinctions...

Width of growth rings really has little to do with specie, and more to do with growing conditions. Hard Maple under the correct conditions can achieve growth rates as high as 2.5" in diameter in 10 years. Also J you should know that every time a tree forks you will get double heart. A good logger removes more defect trees than good trees so you should see alot of double hearts in firewood quality trees. I guess after seeing 2+million board feet of Hard Maple every year for 20+years you get pretty proficient at ID, and have seen more shapes and forms than most folks.

LOL I get that part and pointed it out to you in another. I for one have never got any hardwood with two harts. I always see it in sliver maple.

Okay, so if I have two identical trees and one grows in a shaded wood lot and the other in full sunshine 6-8 hours a day out in the open, will the shaded one have tighter growth rings from slower growth? I know soil conditions play a role here too.

As well as water. more sunlight=more growth.

Yep. That sunshine can do wonders for many things, including trees. Proof of that is the edge of the woods vs the center. Notice how the limbs and even the trunk will bend towards the sunshine while in the middle of the woods the trees grow straighter. They grow straight up looking for that sunshine.
