Hi Folks,

We're having an Osburn 2200 installed this week into our existing masonry fireplace. Been meaning to do it for a while but we finally got motivated after reading that it is meant to be one of the coldest winters on record.

So my inquiry is regarding mantel protection. We have a wood mantel that comes very close to the combustible range Osburn lists, but the mantel is complicated in that the carvings stick out almost as much as the shelf does, so we don't know where to measure from. Our sides are very far from the edge of the unit because our masonry opening is extra wide (48"), but only 30" tall, so I'm concerned about the wood above the insert being awful close. Osburn's customer service was not particularly helpful in giving me a definitive answer on what we need to modify it with, if anything. I'd rather err on the safe side either way.

We've scoured Amazon and can only find black mantel shields that attach to the mantel itself, but that would look awful given that our mantel is white and has so many carvings on it and nowhere flat enough to screw it in. The shield should be able to fit onto the insert itself according to the folks we're buying from, but I haven't got a clue as to how to find one that is the right size.

Any suggestions would be welcome. We also welcome ideas on where to buy an affordable grate to fit around the fireplace to keep kids safe when they are in the area (ideally something we could remove and put back on fairly often).

Many thanks in advance!

The PDF manual says...

Combustible top mantle to unit14'' Combustible shelf to unit22''

Back in the day with an old smoke dragon we had a similar issue. We built our own surround that fit the the fire box instead of going over the brick. We also attached a defector plate to the lentil over the insert that stuck out about the width of the mantel. I don't know if this will work for you, but might get your thinking toward a solution.

Have pic? Wood around fireplace gets warm but nothing that is going to cause a fire. (broken image removed)

Measure the wood from the closest point to the stove, and then have something custom-made that protects anything of concern, in a way that is attractive as possible... buying something ready-made that protects and ALSO looks great will be an unlikely scenario.
