Does anybody think this would be a good combination? I'm planning on mixing year old cut box elder with 2 year seasoned dead locust for this winter. I just think the locust needs a kick in the pants at the beginning of the burn.

Should work well. I find Black Locust to be a bit slow going by itself, even over a hot bed of coals.
It seems like locust needs a lot of air too. I find it hard to get the combustor to ignite with locust only. The box elder will bring the temps up to light the combustor so the locust can cruise.

I have some 1 year white ash too. I think I'm going to blend that in with the locust as well. Should be a toasty winter.
Boxelder always seems to stay wet just under the bark for me. Even after 1 - 2 yrs. if you can keep it dry should work fine.
Cherry seems to do the same for me, even though it's top-covered. Must soak in a little water when rain hits the ends. No big deal, though.
