Modifying heatform

I have a heatform that I am quickly finding out very few inserts fit, and even fewer flush inserts which it pretty much a must. It's 20" deep however, because it slants down in the back, at the very back of the box is only 15". The home is just short of 1800 sq ft and the only inserts I can find that will fit because of the slant are only rated for around 1000 sq ft. Has anyone ever cut the back out to fit an insert, is it safe to do or should I stick with finding a small insert ?

Heatforms are common in these parts, and yes, much cutting is required to fit in most inserts. The heat tubes in the throat, and the throat itself, can be problematic. The slope on the fireback often needs to be hogged out as well. I like to tape myself in the firebox behind a dropcloth with sawzall, angle grinder, and lots of blades and have at it. Shop vac and good eye protection is required. Good luck.

I had to cut out the throat area for my insert to fit. I also recommend a sawzall and one of the heavy duty metal cutting blades... I used this one and it went pretty quickly.

You can use some cardboard to build a scale of the stove you're considering to see exactly how it will fit when clearances are close.
