mortar between fire bricks

would it be better to mortar in between the fire bricks in my Century stove or just let the ash fill in the spaces. or maybe furnace cement?
 
I would say to definitely not mortar between the bricks. If you crack or break a brick, the mortar could make it a real bear to replace.

Just my opinion.
 
After the stove is broken in, often times you cant even tell there are bricks there anymore because the fine ash gets compacted into the cracks and makes it look like one giant refractory on the bottom.
