My new Jotul F 500 Oslo

So I did it, just bought my new Jotul Oslo!
I can not wait for the fall to fire her up!
Got the dealer down to $1800 minus the 30% tax credit (= to $540) and sold my VC Vigilant on CL for (cough cough) $500 (listen i posted at that price in hopes of a good negotiation offer!) so the total cost of the Oslo for me was $760 WHAT A BUY!
Look forward to sharing my first fires.

Congratulations all around! don't you just love it when a plan comes together smoothly? I think the Jotuls are great looking stoves, BTW.

Seems strange that you're celebrating the purchase of a new stove while I spent the day lacing on the deck canopy, zipping on the screen panels, and stringing Christmas lights for some "ambiance". Hard to believe we'll be firing those babies up in 4-5 mos..

It was my first and only stove, now running 9 years perfectly. So I can't compare it to anything else. You will like the side loading, big fire box, up to 25 inch logs, lots of heat and fire control. You won't like the ash that falls out when you open the front door. We did this for a lot of years to clean the glass. Now that we know the stove, we didn't open the front all winter, burned hot fires that kept the glass burned off. That said it's a real nice stove.

That's great, a 25" log AND side loading. Those are the reasons I like my heritage, that side door is so freaking wonderful. You'll learn to start fires from the side and to load wood in a staggered pattern to allow the fire to burn the logs well.

Looks really nice and the price is great. Congrats on departing the VC club.

By staggered do you mean small kindling facing closest to the front (glass door) and larger pieces building up towards the back of the fire box?

So far so good, i can not believe how much easier it is to light a fire in a new epa stove. In my old vigilant, i would almost always have the fire die down a few times before successfully lighting off the kindling. In the Oslo, however, it was like set it and forget it....lit the paper and off she went. im going to hold off on the third break-in step of 400 degrees untill this fall but I just wanted to stress how much easier this thing already feels compared to all I had to learn last season with the vigilant.

Man - Just reading about this has me wanting to fire up my Oslo. Now that I'm not burning during the warmer months I have a sudden urge to stoke up a fire.

Decided to build the first two of my break-in fires tonight. Its a chilly damp 50 degree night here in MA so I could justify firing her up (wasnt that hard). So far so good, i can not believe how much easier it is to light a fire in a new epa stove. I found the same thing when I did the break-in burns on our new Oslo this spring. Light it and forget it, and away it went! I'm already looking forward to colder weather this fall.

By staggered do you mean small kindling facing closest to the front (glass door) and larger pieces building up towards the back of the fire box?

By staggered I mean that you can't just slide in 4-6 straight splits of wood all parallel to each other or they will lock in and present a solid mass of wood to the fire. You will kind of angle each layer of splits so that the fire can climb through the wood load. You'll see, there's more than one way to load the logs is all.

Forget the colder weather this Fall . . . I think I "put the stove to bed" too soon this year. The past few evenings I've been wearing sweat pants and flannel shirts (and yesterday I briefly considered digging out my winter long johns) . . . and I'm still having 2 blankets or 3 blanket nights. So much for Global Warming.

Anways, it appears there may be some wiggle room in the pricing on these stoves. This gives me a little confidence to go in there and haggle a bit.

No problem. According from the dealer I purchased the stove at, pricing will be going up and has at many locations already. Definitely do some homework though...I found that some were willing to match prices and others absolutly refussed to do so. Im not sure why it was like this and with such big price differences. The only thing I can think of is that dealers who sell more volume get better costs on the stoves.
Oh and yes the castine is one step down from the oslo

The Castine is indeed the next smaller model from the Oslo. When we purchased our Oslo earlier in the spring, I managed to get $400 knocked off the price and some free stovepipe thrown in, plus very cheap delivery and positioning on the hearth by the shop folks. I don't know if things have changed in the market since then.

I measured the firebox very quickly when I was comparing it to the Quad Isle Royale. I came up with around 2.5 cubic feet of usable volume. I'm not sure how well you can compare these numbers to each other for different stoves from different manufacturers. When I measured the Isle Royale for comparison, it came out only slightly larger, despite having a nominal 3 cu ft volume.

Yep......In 2004 I bought my Oslo for $1,399.00 in Warwick RI (Stovepipe Fireplace shop) at the time Preston was selling Castines for that price. In 2006 My brother-in law Dave Picked up a Firelight from StovePipe also for $1,849.00. (no one matching that price either at the time...not even Preston) Since then though, Preston Trading Post has been doing a hell of a business, matching or beating prices. So in May 2008 I took my father-in-law down to Preston and came home with an Oslo for $1,675.00 (lowest in the area at the time)

Wow thats a good price for just last year. I called the place in Warwick too but he wouldnt beat Prestons price. I talked to dealers in MA who wouldnt even budge below $1900 to match the price.
Im happy with the price and extreamly happy with what i've seen the stove do so far.
