Thanks ahead of time for the help great forum. I live in a 6000 sq ft. home, 2000 of that is a walk out basement that I'm not too concerned with heating. On the main level I have a large family room that has a three foot door opening that goes into a two story foyer and then a kitchen. On the other side of the same wall is another three foot opening that leads to the a small sitting room and then into the kitchen. There are three bedrooms upstairs and as mentioned it's an open foyer. The fireplace in the family room is stone masonary fireplace, 38 inches across the front 24 inches in height and the back of the fireplace tapers down to 32 inches across and is 26 inches from front to back. Theres is only one inch of a wood mantle showing that sits on stone. The fireplace is also built up off of the ground by two feet. The chimney is brick and only one story tall. I don't care if it's an insert or a free standing stove as long as its very well made and throws out some serious heat, I'd rather pay more the first time and get it right than to have regrets. I'm looking for suggestions with either way I go, the cost of propane is killing me. Thanks for the help.

Welcome. The fact that the family room is closed off from the rest of the house with just a 3 ft opening is going to be a challenge for heat distribution. How tall is the ceiling in the family room? Can you post a picture of the fireplace? A simple sketch of the floorplan would also help.

Theres actually two three foot openings one on each side of the same wall. The ceilings downstairs are 9 ft with the exception of the two stroy foyer. The three bedrooms upstairs all shoot off the same hallway and the foyer is open so when you step out of your bedroom you can look down into the foyer. I'll have to have my kids post any pictures my computer skills are average at best. Thanks.

hey roadking, where are you at in dayton? i'm in miamisburg.

I think you will have some good alternatives. If you can draw up a quick floor plan sketch and have the kids shoot a picture of it to post here that will help. With two doorways we may be able to work out a circular convection plan.

not sure if this would help you or not, i have the "add-on furnace" from Englander i'm currently using as dump heat to heat my house. you are more than welcome to come up and look at it if you feel it might give you some direction.

If I understand what you are saying you have foyers on the first floor that are open to the second so you have an open hall or balcony from the upstairs looking down to the first floor. If that's the case it sounds like you have huge volume of space to heat. You would need to go big, maybe a wood furnace makes sense.
