Need Local Wood Chadds Ford, PA

Hi Everyone,

SOOO tired of getting ripped off by landscapers who sell wood they claim is seasoned...turns out to be green as grass and never a full cord. Two years running of trying to keep my house warm with two wood stoves.

I'm a 68 year old with pretty bad arthritis, so I can't just go out and fell trees on my own!

Anyone know of a wood supplier near Chadds Ford/Kennett Square area in PA? I'm thanking everyone in advance for any recommendations! Jamie

Your solution is to buy at least a year in advance. Leave stacked in single rows til the following year. Unfortunately this isn't enough seasoning but its better than ordering and burning. Ordering and burning will never work!

Do you have a truck or a trailer? I can recommend someone in Quakertown who will sell you quality wood, seasoned for over year. 40 cubic feet for $50. It's probably a bit of a drive, but it's not far from 476. I dunno if a 2 hour round trip is something you'd do, but if you can haul a good bit, it would be worth it.

I ordered from two separate places this year as I'm new to the area and behind the eight ball on wood (I usually scrounge, but just moved here last year and stove being installed next week). I wanted to try two places and see what I got. Very different results. Do not order from the guy who's advertising on 926 near Willowdale - green, funky shaped wood (Almost imposable to stack). He's actually out of Landednburg (All seasons landscaping and Tree). I'm actually going to call him tomorrow and complain about the wood and see if I can either get a refund of some sort or a cord that will actually burn and stack - I've actually got about a half cord (I ordered two) that I didn't even bother to stack as it's so bad.

The other person I ordered from was pretty good - moisture is just above 20% and much cleaner, stackable wood. He's known as the wood guy. He's located on 202 just as you enter West Chester (He also owns that butcher/meat place on the west side of 202). His number is 610-701-9520. $220 a cord. What hurts is that I paid more to the guy from Landenberg, for far worse firewood. I'll now for the future, but I hope to scrounge most of my wood from here on, just as I did in CT when I was there. Good luck.

As many have said on this site, buying is a crap shoot. I wish I didn't have to, but timing didn't work for me this year. I've already got about a cord of scrounged wood that's stacked for next year. I hope to continue to scrounge over the winter months and build up to about 4 cords.

Always figure Advertised "seasoned wood" has been seasoned with 2 stroke exhaust and bar oil, on 98% of those. I particularly like the ones that say it is seasoned because it has been cut and laying around in rounds for a year or so. Not much better that the guy who cut it and split it yesterday and is selling it today.

I'm near Kennett Square. Had to buy wood 2x when first got stove and never again. I was lucky enough to find a local guy that didn't advertise on CL that had 1 year C/S/S ash and it was truly a full cord for $180 picked up. The other time, well that is why I scrounge now. I can't offer tips on any suppliers locally however Eco brick or Bio bricks (many different names for them) are probably your best bet at this time of the year to either burn exclusively or mix with the unseasoned wood.

If you do find a local seller that has decent firewood, post it here in case others come along in your situation. Good luck!

Three Mountains Landscape in Glenmore delivers to Kennett Square. I know people that have gotten cords from them. Friend got two cords this year from them and were pleased. He has a fireplace though so he s not the best judge.

Thanks so much for the reply! Sadly, with my age and shoulders shot to hell, I'm lucky if I can carry 10-15 splits, and have a older 4 runner, so no access to truck. But I appreciate your suggestion!

His stack is hard to spot as it's tucked away behind some buildings. If you stop at the meat place they might talk with you more about it and show you what they have out back. He claims to do 200+ cords a year, so he's definitely getting business.

Thanks for this Pauly...ironic, I was in Glenmore two weeks ago to a gun shop and an alpaca farm! I'll investgate. I "get" the fireplace dig...we have two wood stoves, two propane, and two fireplaces. ( stoves are NOT inserts in the hearths). The only real judge we have of how good we're heating is with the stoves. Thanks again for the insight. Jamie

To anyone in the Brandywine Valley area of PA, Heads up! I found a GREAT wood guy! Want to give a shout out to Bushfire who turned me on to this source. Jerry the Wood Guy has a meat market on 926 in Westtown( as Bushfire said) and he just delivered 2 cords of GREAT ash 16-18" splits. Some of the best and most consistent good wood I've had. I'm in the same boat with just having installed my stove. I was scrambling for wood for this season & had to take a gamble on craigslist. Got a cord delivered last night that was good and dry but the splits are enormous. I'll have to split it down to usable size which will end up probably a little under a cord. but at least it'll burn this season.

Thanks for that info bluedogz. I live in Elkton and have been looking for a backup plan. Better to get a recommendation off here rather then take a chance on craigslist
