Hi all. My first thread after lurking for a while. Straight to the point. New S30. 400 gallons of storage. 1200 square foot shop with infloor heat. 1500 square foot house with existing forced air furnace with a 100k heat ex. In it.. I am a real guy with a real budget. Mike at biothermic has been great so far. I will be leaning on him and possibly hearth.com for any info. I'll have pics soon.

Hello hyfire. Ive read more is better in the storage game. What is there to gain from more storage? That is an honest question. Is it flat out more efficiency? Which would mean less wood consumption. So if I had 800 gallons of storage I would burn half the wood? I figure start at 400 and move up if necessary.

If nothing else, you want to have enough storage so that you only have to fire once per day, at most...unless you are retired and don't mind being around the house to fire whenever needed.
It won't be for efficiency on a Froling...it would be maybe a bit on an old school forest eater.

Ok. That was my understanding as well. I can understand the need for more storage and that I may need more. But I am going to start here at 500. The boiler and buffer will be in the shop. Forgot to mention. I have logstor pipe for my run to the house ~80'. For the price it would be nice if they put a wire in it for the tstat..

Run a spare pvc conduit for future wiring at least 1" . It will just give you longer time between firings. If you need to fire 2 loads a day and everythingreaches max temps before the 2nd load is only 1/2 done then it will go to idle mode and thats not good.

Let me know what you think. The caleffi thermobloc is the only thing I'm thinking about. It's about 1200 dollars cdn.. could I put a mixing valve there? Like I said.. I'm a newbie so be gentle.. I appreciate any input and constructive response.

You definitely want a loading valve / thermobloc to prevent condensation in the boiler. Scott at Tarm recommended an LK823 loading valve and a separate circulator. It was a lot less expensive than a thermobloc and it will probably be easier to swap out the circulator if it ever needs to be replaced. I went with the LK823 from Scott and found a Resideo (Honeywell) ECM circulator (PCVF-ECM2020) with 0-10V control for my Froling S3 install (currently in progress). The Resideo was a lot less expensive than other 0-10V control options but it has gone up in price. It appears that the S3 will directly control the speed of a non-ECM circulator but an ECM circulator requires 0-10V control.

The Tarm web page does not list the LK823 but you might email or give them a call. I also got a flue adapter from them to convert the Froling 150mm flue to 6". Biothermic may have a loading valve option, too.

You can find more info in my install thread:

If you don't have the Service Manual you can get it here:

It may be different than what you have depending on the firmware version. I'm still trying to figure out how to get the latest firmware installed on my boiler.

There is also a German language Froling forum which can be read with Google translate:

I have 1000 gallons storage and i don't have an expansion tank that is 200 liters, it might be 100 liters

You can use 30 psi, but a little wiggle room can't hurt the acceptance volume wont change much but the total volume will if you lower the relief psi numbers. Looks like somewhere in the 40-45 total expansion volume and the acceptance volume about 15 gal. based on 500 gal. from the watts calculator.
