New (used) splitter

Craigslist is good sometimes. I found this yesterday morning and could not pass it up.

I have been looking for a splitter for months. This is an older Huskee 25 ton.

Honda 5 horse engine. Starts first pull every time.

I split about a face cord last night. Goes through everything, even the 40 inch red oak round was no match for it.

I know pictures or it isn't true so here you go.

The little orange flag was provided by the former owner. He knew it could not be seen from the drivers seat, so he included the flag. It worked great. The flag is not attached in the photo, just sitting behind the splitter on the ground.

Former owner was a once a year splitter user, has gotten away from burning wood. It is a 1999 Huskee 25 ton. I could not believe the condition. Had to grab it. It is not super fast, but beats the heck out of renting or hand splitting.

I picked up a gently used (fairly new) huskee on craigslist last fall as well. Very, very happy with my purchase. It has freed up a TON of time, and I can split everything unlike with my fiskars. I think you will be happy going to hydraulics, congrats on the purchase.

Splitters around here are like gold. I've been looking for a decent used one but everybody is asking way too much. What should I get, a well used homemade splitter for $1200 or a brand new store bought splitter for $1200?

I was ready to go with a 22 ton Huskee or a DHT from Lowes. You may be able to get HD or Lowes to give a 10% reduction if you get their charge card, but right now they are not doing that.

I see that too on splitters and Stihl saws. Why buy new when you can pay the same and buy used?

Unless that used one has many extra features (eg log lift) or is much larger/faster and still nearly new, I'd go with the new one in a heartbeat. Brandy-new, with warranty, and nobody has run it out of oil, hob-gobbled it together, or otherwise beat it up.

Harbor Freight just sent out a 20% off your entire purchase coupon - got it yesterday. You might be able to convince HD or Lowes to match it under their price matching policy.

Mine was ~50% of a new 27 ton Huskee. Absolutely worth it. It just pushes through the tough splits and literally cuts the real stubborn knots.
