new wood hook up - if its worth it

A few guys I work with who travel quite a long way from the hills deep in WVA have some property they own and.... free wood (for them) they are pretty nice guys, and said they would hook me up with truck packed full of 18inch long rounds of locust for free, except the gas money it will take to drive a truck to my house. They have a 1.5 hour commute. Does $30 for a truck bed stack of locust rounds sound pretty good?... they are super nice guys and said they will hook me up with as much as I want - but for $30 in gas each time.

Oh - Also, a guy i was buying pine from, who apparently gets a large amount of free wood from an arborist has a bunch of wood he is giving away since he doesn't have time to process it. So..... he will be dropping off a dump load for a small delivery fee next week.

Locust is premium firewood. $30 for a pick up truck load which I would estimate to be around 1/3 of a cord depending on the size of the bed = $90 for a full cord. It sounds like they have to travel across state and county lines to bring you this wood. I don't know what the local laws are but it may be worth researching so these "nice guys" don't end up getting ticketed or fined for trying to help you out. Other than that I would say it's a decent deal.

good idea, I know nothing about carrying wood across state lines. I didn't know it was an issue. They really are good guys.... great workers and overall have a willingness to help out (at work, and outside of work.)

I believe the issue with transporting wood is disease, bugs, problems that could be transported along with the wood.
Just a guess.

Who enforces those bans anyways? Every weekend i bring a truck and trailer load of wood back 200 miles even tho in this state were not supposed to transport it more than 50 miles.
I never been stopped and i doubt illegal wood smuggling is high on police enforcement list.

A truck load of black locust (a full size truck is 1/2 cord) for $30 and you have to ask? I'd have them drop off as many as they're willing to do, BL won't rot and you'll have primo firewood for a long time.

idk, i don't think the guy has a huge truck. figured i'd ask to see how "good" a deal it is. these are rounds stacked... not split wood. I'm assuming he can pack a truck bed with a bunch of beefy rounds. I'll see how it goes.... should be next week. i'll post photos.

Those of us who burn for heat essentially rely on a healthy forest ecosystem for our resource, so please don't move firewood long distances as it increases the opportunity for pests and diseases to be spread. Emerald Ash Borer and Thousand Canker disease threaten our Ash and Walnut populations, and those are just two examples.

Takes a good year in good spot, I'd let it go two if you don't need it right away. Even if its a small pickup like I have is at least 1/3 cord so still a good deal.

Well, neither wood option has happened as of yet. I may heed the advice of some and not have the guy transport the wood from WV. I mentioned to them that it may be illegal and didn't want them to get into trouble, so I think that halted things.

I need to get a saw so i can just go to that pine guys wood yard and harvest as much free wood as I can.

I think you gave up a good thing, at minimum I would have taken the initial load to see what you would get. Locust is premium wood, no comparison to pine......

the pine guy has tons of wood, other than pine, that is free but I have to go cut it up myself. This guy has mountains of wood all over the place. Looks like at one point he had a mill in operation. Good thing is he is a mile down the street. I just need a saw ASAP.... he is an older guy and I have to call repeatedly about getting him to deliver it.... so i might as well just load up the SUV every couple of days and choose the prime pieces myself.

Locust gets bothered by locust borers and I think they are pretty widespread and native. IDK Im not a fan of Locust but I might have asked a local official.
But I guess the word is 50 mile radius. With the firewood pest issue its probably better to skip it.

I would say a full size pickup with rounds is more like 1/3 cord, and that's with a decent crown. Even so, like someone already said $90 cord of all locust is really good even though you have to split it. The difference you would notice between the pine would be incredible.
