we bought a small 2 story home 1000 sf, down stairs is open with a large living room and kitchen, a stairway in the middle of the living room, going upstairs to a hallway a bathroom and 2 bedrooms. I want to put in a chimney and wood stove. I thought in the middle of the down stairs close to the stairway?

As to a recommendation on the exact placement of a stove we would need to see blueprints of your floor plan. However, in general, it sounds like you would be well served placing the stove someplace on the main level of your home, probably in the living room. Placing aside the difficulty or ease of running a chimney I would advise you select a spot for your stove where you can have good access for viewing from an easy chair or sofa. It's quite enjoyable for many of us here at the forum to sit and watch our fires burn while we warm our feet and read a good book, listen to some music, etc.
If you include a sketch of your floor plan and detail the type of roof on your home I'm sure you'll get some good suggestions on where it might be best to locate a stove for your particular set of variables. Myself, I would try to get my chimney exiting my roof near the ridge if possible, assuming you have a pitched roof. This makes cleaning easier since you have ready access to the top of the flue. Also, having a shorter chimney sticking up through the roof usually looks better aesthetically. Good Luck.

Also consider logistics of getting wood to the stove, fire safety, resale value etc should also be carefully considered in addition to Nick's points.
Adding a hearth and chimney into a 1000 sq ft two story home without destroying the flow within the existing floor plan maybe a challenge. Do not rush into this project without considering the what if's (ie we move)

Not sure about dimensions, but would a corner install here work? If that common wall next to the kitchen entrance is too narrow, then move the stove down a bit on the wall?

Gotta agree with begreen. Did you say that your home is 1000sqrt total. What stove are you looking at?

Not to talk you out of anything , but have you looked at Menards for the drolet myriad. Costs less and I believe it's the same size fire box?
Looks like most of the Drolet XL stoves are roughly the same firebox size but clearances differ quite a bit. With a corner install I would lay out a template then find the one with the best clearance so you don't lose to much space in the room.
