Wow 1 million households with wood stoves or fireplaces. With Norway's population being only 5 million total and a household average of 2.1 persons, that's a significant percentage.

But 8 hrs of just a fire burning. Sheesh, I thought US tv was boring.

The NY times has a front page article on a Norwegian TV program on wood burning. For those interested......Bark up or down?

I was just about to mention this detail. The Norwegians are fanatics on this issue

Myself, I stack the wood so poorly my wife won't let me near it, never mind bark up or down

Find some time to read through the online comments about this story. My personal favorite:

"the perfect husband apparently chops wood with a smile on his face, no gloves, drinks coffee once an hour while listening to the birds. After the chopping of the wood, he proceeds to stack the wood in sturdy stacks of not too uneven (nor too even) height and depth. This man has good health, enjoys his life, finishes his projects and makes a great dad."

Bark up or down?

For a while he stood silent.
Then finally he said,
with a very bad shake
of his very old head,
"As you know, on this side of the Wall
we are Yooks.
On the far other side of this Wall
live the Zooks."
Then my grandfather said,
"It's high time that you knew
of the terribly horrible thing that Zooks do.
In every Zook house and in every Zook town
every Zook burns his wood
with the bark side down!"

"But we Yooks, as you know,
we always burn
our wood," Grandpa said,
"with the bark side up.
That's the right, honest way!"
Grandpa gritted his teeth.
"So you can't trust a Zook who burns bark underneath!
Every Zook must be watched!
He has kinks in his soul!
That's why, as a youth, I made watching my goal,
watching Zooks for the Zook-Watching Border Patrol!

"To be fair, the program was not universally acclaimed. On Twitter, a viewer named Andre Ulveseter said: “Went to throw a log on the fire, got mixed up, and smashed it right into the TV.”" ;lol;lol;lolLMAO

Yeah, but it wasn't what you think. "While the Yule log fire plays on a constant repeating loop, the fire on “National Firewood Night” burned all night long, in suspensefully unscripted configurations. Fresh wood was added through the hours by an NRK photographer named Ingrid Tangstad Hatlevoll, aided by viewers who sent advice via Facebook on where exactly to place it."

That's what I call passion, people kibbitzing the fire tending on television.

I'm sure they put it in the wrong place.

“You can tell a lot about a person from his firewood stack.”
amen.

"firewood is the foundation of our lives."

There has to be some way to work this into the title/description for this forum or the Wood Shed...

Check out Colbert's take on this last night...great!
