I was given old fire starter candles (previously used in non air tight antique stove) . Are they ok to use in my newer Waterford Ashling? (Noncat) I have always used paper. Should I just throw them out?

If theyre the firestarters you see in the stores then your fine. I’m not sure what you meant by “ candle”. For future reference, Super Cedar brand firestartes are popular on this forum. There usually is promo code that looks like “hearth2020” or something.
