Old blaze king question?

My name is chad I live in arkansas . I am a brick mason and built my fireplace from the ground up. My house is small only 1600 ft. But has cathedral ceilings in the liven room-kitchen. I used the fireplace along with the furnace for 4 or 5 years . Last year I built a grate blower , that worked well but I burnt over 20 ricks last year. $ is tight with the economy. I bought a used insert off of craigslist. It is a blaze king model FF-402 . It is in excellent condition. My ? is the insert worth a hoot. My fireplace has no problem drawing, I can build a fire out in front of it and it still draws the smoke in. Thanks chad

Welcome Chad. Blaze King builds some stout products. This is an old model and will not conserve wood like a new Blaze King would. Maybe it's worth half a hoot, but not a holler.

How is it going to be connected to the chimney flue?

on the back of insert it has a slot about 4 inches wide and almost the length of the back of the insert, with a flap in it for a dampner. Any thing will save wood over the fireplace. Wood is plentyful . I think it was meant to be slid in as a slammer, but I have a welder so anything is possible. Might use it that way this year then put a liner to it next year.

Wow, anyone would be proud to have a fireplace like that, nice work.
That is definately an early B-K, and while not as efficient as the later cat models, it will indeed be better than an open fireplace. One of the weaker points on the early models is a tendancy to crack at the corners of the door frame on the box. Close eyeballing will reveal it. I suppose it was caused by welding stress.
Check the door seal with a dollar bill shut in the door, if you can pull it out, best to replace the gasket. The later ones use a 7/8 inch fiberglass rope, yours might be different, but it is a inexpensive piece of maintainence that pays off nicely.
