Old Duerr splitter

Very happy to find this Forum. Have been a wood lover and user for many years. I just read a very good book called “Norwegian Wood” by Lars Mytting. Well worth reading by anyone who loves wood.
I was just given an older 22 ton Duerr splitter of unknown age, by someone who said “I borrowed it from my grandpa about 20 years ago. It stopped running and I got a good deal on a new splitter and don’t have time to mess with it.”
It has a 5 hp Briggs and Stratton motor. The head is aluminum. It has no spark. New plug also has no spark. I think it probably has points and condenser ignition. I haven’t been able to find the serial number on the motor.
Anybody have suggestion about where the serial number is on the motor, and/or other points of interest about B&S engines? Also am interested in comments about these Duerr beasts.

Can't help you with your splitter but agree with you about 'Norwegian Wood'. I should dig out my copy, if the wife hasn't donated it someplace, and reread it.

Points, condenser, coil is the order of attack I would use on that engine.

Lots of those old beasts still out there making firewood.

You should find that serial number. It should be stamped.

Got the flywheel off and discovered a fractured key on the crankshaft. Also discovered the motor has no points or condenser; after a little research I found the motor has a magnetron ignition system. I am guessing ~mid 90's manufacture. Looked again for model/serial # but it still eludes me - have looked in all the likely places. Maybe one day after I stop looking it will jump out at me.

Duerr log splitter?

My dad picked up a Duerr log splitter yesterday for $400. He said it looks like the engine (5 HP Briggs) is tired, but otherwise its in good shape. I haven't seen it yet but will post pics later today. From what he's told me its probably similar to this one I found online: The one in...

Yeah that motor is newer than what I had pictured in my head. I sure wouldn't go too far considering a five horse Predator from Harbor Freight isn't big money and they run well

Here is another attempt to upload pics of the old 22 ton Duerr.

I wouldn't spend the first dime on that motor. Watch for a HF sale and go pickup a 6.5 HP Predator and be done with it. Those years of BS engines weren't the best when they were new. Had several on two inch water pumps and they were a pain to keep running. I have a lot of Predator engines out here on the farm and have not had any issues with them.

I would look on FB Marketplace for a failed pump pressure washer with any of the Honda GX series engines on it and poach that engine over to your rig. Like Hedge Wood noted above those B & S engines aren't the best built out there, Had a 5 HP B & S on my splitter when I bought it in '92, it lasted about 6 years then completely died. Found a place with several Honda GX200 series pressure washers with failed pumps and have had great luck with one, cost me about $100. I can find failed pressure washers with Honda's on them for $50-100 around here.
