p38 and passthrough thimble and straight chimney pipe

I see that a straight pipe out the wall and terminated with a diffuser is not the" best" method of exausting these fireplaces . I understand the out and min 3 ft of vertical pipe then an elbow is the best but i have a window and dont want to ruin the view with a candy cane of 4" pipe . i will be useing a battery back up so that i dont get a smoke filled fire pot migrating into the house . Just asking for your thought before i go this route . and has anyone have a better suggestion than the inverter from harman on the the battery back up . problems or issues please forward .

I vent my stove straight out the wall behind the stove. My entire vent is 4' long with no vertical rise and it wors great.

My stove doesn't have provisions for a battery backup system so I use an APC with a pair of 90Ah marine batteries wired in which gives me 8 - 10 hours of run time in a power outage.

I have a similar setup - P61a with a 45 degree elbow then straight through the wall via Harman thimble, terminating horizontally with a jet cap. I have it on an ups which will run it for about 50 min or so. Gives me plenty of time to start the generator and plug the ups into that to keep the stove going. works well, no issues.

^^^^^^^^^ - what he said. APC is a brand - a popular brand. There are plenty of others. I own a Cyberpower UPS. UPS will monitor the line voltage they are plugged into and in the event of a power disruption, they will switch over to battery power to keep whatever is plugged into them running for a certain amount of time. I have my pellet stove, server, and DSL router plugged into mine. My UPS will run all three for about 25-30 min simultaneously (or 50 min for just the stove), which gives me time to plug the UPS into my generator if need be.

During the winter months, the only time I shut my stove down is for cleaning. It's conceivable that a power failure can occur with me not home to deal with it for hours. I also like the idea of being able to shut my noisy generator off to sleep at night and still keep warm.

I had the same concern. My Generac 8000W generator will power everything in my house including the well pump, but it's way too loud. I picked up a Yamaha 2000W inverter generator whose sole job during winter months is to power the UPS and the stuff on it, charge laptops, and run a couple lights and TV, isolated from the Generac and transfer switch. It does so very well, and if we were having a conversation standing next to it while it was running at full throttle, we wouldn't have to raise our voices. I couldn't believe how quiet it was. I thought about deep cycle marine batteries and an inverter- I actually have one for the boat which I could use - but I get more use out of the Yamaha generator in the summer. the only hole in my plan was a multiple hour outage if we weren't home - the stove goes into shutdown mode on the UPS.

My stove doesn't communicate with the UPS so I had to build my own shutdown circuit. I use a low voltage sensor connected to a relay on my auger motor. The auger gets turned off when the voltage gets too low which will force the stove to shutdown when the fire goes out.
