Pallet size

Can someone give me the dimensions of a pallet that a ton of wood pellets come on? I'm trying to calculate how many tons I can fit in given area. Thank you.

The pallets mine came on measure 40"x48".

so if you have the height you can get more per Sq. ft
of storage space.

Usually stacked layer of 5 .. 10 layers on a 40x48..
I can get 6 at a times as a layer when I re-stack for the basement. why do I do 6? I don't know... just do.

Yes, but... you need another way to unload them from the truck. A forkilft is great to lower them from the truck, but is usually too tall to go into a garage.

My dealer uses a flatbed truck that can lower its bed to the ground. The tons can be rolled off the truck and into the back corner of the garage with a pallet jack. It saves a lot of time.

My neighbor has a tractor with a fork attachment where the front loader goes, it fits into all sorts of tight places.

The pallet dimensions are 40"x48" but when calculating how many you can fit in an area use 42"x50". There is often a slight overhang on the pallet.

I unwrap the pallet and use a dolly to move 5 bags at a time into my storage area inside the house. The narrow passage I have to pass through limits how much I can move at a time.

Wouldn't that makes things a little more difficult when it comes time to use them?

My pallets arrive with 1.5 tons on each this makes the stack 15 bags high
the top 4 rows have to be slid off to remove. Two tones would be 20 bags
high you would need a step latter to get the top bags off and at least a 12
foot ceiling
No I wouldn't put one pellet on top of an other for safety reasons and convenience

The height isn't an issue. I'm the guy that routinely conks his head on door frames. I met a guy taller than me once. Stepladder def not needed The ceiling in the shed is high enough, too.

I can see the convenience factor but I'm more concerned about a repeat of last winter's weekly struggle to find someplace having a few bags in stock.

I was mainly concerned with the possibility that the bottom most pellets might crush.

You will definitely want some kind of protective layer between stacks to keep the pallet on top from ripping the bags of the pellets beneath.

I also restack mine 1.5 tons to a pallet but I'm not that tall and have to stand on a crate for the top couple layers.

Hi Velvet, I almost bought a pallet jack off CL for $175 because I had 6 tons delivered (2 years worth). In the end, I decided I needed the exercise and just moved them one bag at a time to the back of the garage. Only takes 20 min to move a ton, and I restack them 1.5 to a pallet.

I haven't bought any pellets yet, but my pallet jack has come in handy to move the pellet boiler and buffer tank. Also, I put drywall on it and jacked it up on the wall-necessity is the mother.

40X48 is a common size.
