Now that the piano is gone, are you going to remove the copper shield? I would want to look at that stove, and feel the heat as much as possible.

That is an attractive stove.

The humidifier is right on the other side of the shield and a computer desk so I was going to leave the copper up, I like the rustic look.

The piano is a good 15 feet from the stove and I will be keeping the room humidified. The computer that now resides where the piano was I hope it melts pos hp.

How far is it from your hearth to the rug? I'd be more concerned about the rug than the humidifier.

The stove is soapstone walls cast iron frame.

12" is what is required for the front. It's a side-loading stove.

My guess is with kids, they might touch it once, then they will become disinterested in doing that again. With that said, I have burned myself on the Progress more than any other stove for some reason. Still the best stove I have ever owned, (takes some counterintuitive getting used to) just installed this stove in it's 2nd location in East Dorset Vt, and banged an outside air intake through the heatolator steel in back of hearth then through some natural stone. But got the outside pipe above snow level. You will enjoy this stove.

From my break in burns it does seem that loading it will require some getting used to. Also the stone gets very hot.

quotejso, the smell from the stove will go away relatively quickly if all that you are smelling is the seasoning of the paint and metal. It will take a few good hot fires to rid of that odor. Our stove does not small at all any more. If you are smelling smoke, that may be a little more tricky to figure out. The stove looks great!

I don't think it was smoke smelled like burnt paint. I just don't remember the englander stinking so bad but the ceilings are higher in its room.

Your Progress is a stinky stove. Mine you can not smell a hint of smoke. You are engaging the catalytic at the right time? Otherwise you have other issues. Keep us posted.

Only have fired it a couple times. Its curing.

I have the temp gauge on the stove near the exit. The gauge wouldn't stick to the metal that the tee and snout are made out of, stainless I think. The manual states to engage the cat at stove top temp of 250 however I have read on here that if you want the slow cat only burn it needs to be engaged before the secondaries get started. Anyone have any tips they would be greatly appreciated.

Looking better, I'd keep going and remove the remaining fence, and I know it's a little bit of a re-work, but reset the stove more into the fireplace and not it out in the room so much, my $.02.

If your starting with a cold stove follow the manual. You'll get secondaries going but once you shut the air down they'll die out. If your doing a reload on a stove with plenty of coals and up to temp you can just shut the door, close the bypass and shut down the air. Usually not recommended but I tried it last night and it worked.
The temp rose which means the cat was working, never saw anything but small flickers of flame under the logs occasionally. Nothing but ash in the morning but the glass did get some black on it.

Why do you think it should be more into the fireplace? Farther out the better right? I am barely clearing the side alcove walls. The last bit of fence might be coming down.

No more fence and no more smell coming of the stove. The wife thinks it's not going when it goes black in cat mode for this shoulder weather.

You must have good draft if you can get a black stove in cat mode with no "woofing". I get violent backpuffs if I don't keep some flame in the fire box.
