I have read through the forums but didn’t find an answer. This photo is rear channel. Can this be welded? Is it dangerous or just less efficient? This unit is built in so to replace I have to tear out all the stone work etc. I have absolutely loved this unit over the years. I need a fire to mentally survive winter 😆

Unfortunately, it looks like that area has been leaking for a while. It might be possible to weld a plate over that area or at least patch with a high-temp epoxy and a stainless plate bolted across it, to buy some time.

@bholler, does Quad have a patch kit for servicing this?

Is it dangerous or just inefficient? If I look at the channel it doesn’t look like it is welded/sealed all the way across so it’s not like it was air tight to begin with. It was probably cracked during last season of operation

This looks like it's developed the crack and sag there due to a secondary air leak causing a hot spot. If so, it will only get worse, possibly burning through the firebox back.

Ok. Thanks for the reply. Not sure what direction I will go. I live for the fire in the winter and loved the quadrafire. I heated 80% of my house with it. However having to not only replace the fireplace but the stone work face every 15 years or so seems problematic. Has anyone one built a base masonry chimney/fireplace that connects to the pipe and then used an insert? I will search for wuadrafire replacements. Happy to hear others thoughts.
