Quadrafire being replaced with Vermont American

I am going to try to get it pulled down this by this weekend to decide on conditions of the pieces. So far I have the broken glass in the right door and now the andiron piece to look for and replace. If I don't find any more major problems I will rebuild but may have to part it out.

Attached are photo's of the Resolute 3 project. The piece attached to the fettle has two photos. I have not found this part listed or even a photo of it anywhere. At this point in the project with difficulty finding parts and pricing when I do I am going to list the stove for parts or repair and move on. Just wanted something to cook on, not interested in a stove restoration project. $200.00 is what I paid. Zip code 13126.

You know you can just cook on.the quad right?

High quality cast iron absolutely is not porous. Yes the surface may be rougher so things will stick to it more. But no nothing actually soaks in.
Oooh, this is a classic question that comes up a lot in the cast iron frying pan industry and the science of seasoning a frypan. Pores may be a misnomer, but its commonly used. There is a difference in the surface of cast from say steel. One term used instead of pores is "peppercorns" that do open up and close depending on temperature. Here's a long conversation on the topic with some micrographs showing the characteristics. Very interesting stuff.

The Quad has an insulation blanket under the top and piping secondary air section. Does not get hot enough!
The hot flue gases go above this area. It sounds like the stove may not be run correctly if it is not getting to at least 400+º on the stove top. 500-650º is totally possible. That's hot enough to boil water pretty quickly and to burn pancakes if not closely attended.

Note that with good dry wood, the stove top will get hotter with less air being supplied to the fire, as secondary combustion kicks in. The ACC combustion control and manual's decription can make this confusing. See this thread for the effect of secondary combustion on stove top and flue temps as the air is closed down.

So nothing to loose in order to move the stove I got my tools out and completely disassembled the stove. Had to drill out some bolts and grind others off. Broke some bolts in the damper linkage and the damper, just twisted off the one going thru the damper linkage that was set up. Tried heat and penetrating oil. Started at 8:30am and just came in at 5:30. Took 2 ash cans full out of the interior of the stove, not sure it was ever cleaned. Being Halloween I'm not sure if this was a trick or a treat at this point.
