... To the Husquvarna 555?

2258 I believe.

Thank you ... local Amish shop is selling Jonsereds ... thought I might compare the prices. I know they're wicked cheap when it comes to chains -- $4 to sharpen and $10-$12 for new chains (not sure of the brands.)

If you have a good local dealer all the better. I know the number of dealers has dwindled significantly since the North American distribution shake-up/requirement changes a few years ago.

Jonsered is still the best brand in my opinion. They have performance proven parts while husky gets the newer technology a year or two ahead. Fine by me since I am a function over fashion fellow for the most part.

I do have a lot of bias though, due to my love of straight handlebars, and the fact that I am a total red & black tool whore.

If price is a major factor, the Maine Dolmar distributor is in Brewer. I don't know if they sell to the public or not.

You can be out the dealer's door though with a 6100 (autotune without the electronics)for $540 with a little dickering...

Jonsered dealers have a lot less margin to play with than they used too.(Walked out with my 2152 for $429 in 2010)

However to best of my knowledge it has a straight handle as opposed to angled on the Husky and uses small mount bar instead of a large mount on the 555.

Don't own one just going on memory. I've been buying Jonsereds for awhile now and I believe I'm accurate on the above.

Otherwise everything else is identical.

As to the Dolmar 6100 I'm a fan of Dolmar but I thought the 6100 had no auto tune. It's a regular carb. I'm not aware of any Dolmar with self adjusting carb like the auto tune on Husky and Jonsered or Mtronic on Stihl.

What kind of prices are you seeing on 2258 / 555 ? Should be at or well under $600 and inline with the 6100

Which means... what, exactly?
The dolmar "strato" is some kind of a reed system from what I understand. Someone else that has one may know more though.

Not the same as an auto tuned carb.

Has to do with the way the air/fuel mixture on intake gets burned and effects efficiency of the burned byproduct and it's exit through the exhaust ports .

Not exclusive to Dolmar. Makes for a more efficient means of cumbustion and cleaner engine.

Found on all other brands of saws.

Dolmar is behind with regards to having no electronic controlled carb.

Or are they ahead...;)

I like less electronics on my saws.

Anyway, sorry OP back on topic.

What is a small mount bar . . . large mount bar? I assume this is not the same as bar length?

Haven't really checked into prices yet . . . I had decided that at some point I will be breaking down and purchasing a 555 until I saw that there was a local Jonsered dealer and thought I might see how the two models compare to each other in terms of features and prices.

It is the stud pattern/ hole size. Most likely K095 small mount on the husky 350 you have. If you change the sprocket on one of the saws you can run either .325 or 3/8 chain on both saws making life more simple.

Like Wildo said above it has to do with the size of the holes in specific the diameter of the horizontal slot where you studs on the saw go through, the size and placement of the oil holes.

I wouldn't get too caught up in mount size. Just will need to know this when it comes time to replace the bar.

I would be more interested in the handle bar angle difference. And to me that's no big deal either.

So that just leaves dealer support. If the Jonsered dealer is close by and is a better dealer for customer support than the Husky option then I would be coming home with a red saw.

If the Husky dealer is closer and also a good dealer then I would have an orange saw.

Both excellent saws

Depending on how well Jonsered is known in your area the Husky might do a little better on resale if you sell it down the road. Or vice versa.

That's good info. I wasnt completely sure. I've got the 50cc version of this saw not the 60cc. The higher output versions of the 555 and 2258 ( husky 562 and Jonsered 2260) must have the large mount.

Either way to the original poster I wouldn't put much thought into the mount. You probably have more available bar brands in large mount. However unless your making a living with the saw and going through bars like a logger would, or you are picky about what bar you want to run , I say who cares. Great saw either way

Good information . . . thank you everyone.

Took a look today at the 2258 . . . I liked it . . . seems like a decent weight. Amish owner said he has had good luck with them and in fact owns this model's pre-cursor. $590 on sale right now with a $100 credit. I still want to stop by and price the Husky 555. I also forgot to ask if they take in trade ins . . . although I suspect the well worn 350 will not be worth a whole lot.

Beyond the weight is how the saw feels especially if your limbing with it. Probably not so much with cutting logs but more so when limbing in tight areas. That design is very nimble.

Outboard clutch allows for very narrow cases and narrow saw compared to other brands in 60cc. Also heavily slanted rearward cylinder keeps center of gravity lower than other designs. I know it sounds like reading more into it and it probably is. But if your using it a lot for hours on end you will appreciate the designs feel.

just my opinion

Anyways price seems ok. If the Husky 555 is the same price then I guess you will need to decide if you like the straight handle or the angled handle better. And also what dealer will provide better service should you need it.

You should be able to sell your running Husky 350 with bar & chain locally on Craigslist or online through eBay for at least $100-$150.

If you do end up with a Husky 555 (or Jonsered equivalent), please make sure you READ the section in the owner's manual about how to start the saw when it's warm/hot. Otherwise, you'll be pulling/pulling/pulling/cursing/pulling. I learned that with my 562XP.

I would kill to have a place that sharpened chains for 4$ - maybe I should check with the local Mennonites, but I can't seem to find any place that does chains at that price.

I bought a Jonsereds 2165 at Orcutts in Dixmont maybe 5 yrs ago to complement my Husqvarna 51. what a difference, I wish I had purchased a 60 plus cc saw years ago (life is too short). The additional power makes cutting up tree length wood a pleasure now rather than a dreaded chore. I don't care if its heavier it has saved me so much time over a smaller saw
